The wartime exploits of ‘Moose’ Fumerton ~ Canada’s highest-scoring night-fighter pilot of WW2

This profile of a Canadian night fighter ace pilot during World War II is full of authentic detail and supported by a number of archive photographs.

In this enjoyable and informative book, author Richard Pike tells the remarkable story of Wing Commander Robert Carl ‘Moose’ Fumerton, DFC & bar, AFC, who joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 and went on to become Canada’s top scoring night-fighter ace of World War Two. He flew Hurricane aircraft with 32 and 401 Squadrons, then Beaufighter and Mosquito aircraft with 89 and 406 Squadrons whilst on active service in the UK and overseas.

Based on Fumerton’s own testimony, this book aims to be more than a simple biography. A former RAF fighter pilot himself, the author has set out to deliver an evocative reconstruction of Fumerton’s wartime exploits, complete with a wealth of authentic detail.

The result is a compelling book that has elements to entertain any reader, being partly an adrenaline-charged real-life adventure story and partly a poignant depiction of a unique era which saw ordinary young men like Fumerton rise to the challenge of opposing the Axis powers and go on to accomplish extraordinary things.

Richard PikeRichard Pike joined the Royal Air Force in August 1961 when, like his father before him, he became a flight cadet at Cranwell. He began his 40-year professional flying career on the English Electric Lightning and went on to fly the F4 Phantom. On leaving the RAF he became a civilian helicopter pilot, flying S61 helicopters for the North Sea oil industry and later in a Coastguard search and rescue role. His duties also took him to destinations overseas, including the Falklands and Kosovo.
